topher-au / SnakeBite

SnakeBite is a mod manager/launcher for Metal Gear Solid V (PC/Steam).

Getting started with SnakeBite

When you first run the application, you will be greeted by the setup wizard. This will walk you through the steps required to run SnakeBite.

During the setup process you will be prompted to

  1. Select your MGSV installation directory
  2. Create a backup of the game data
  3. Modify game data to prepare for modding

Some of the game data needs to be modified to allow for easier installation of mods. During setup, any MGSV system data contained in 00.dat will be moved into 01.dat. Afterwards, any files installed by SnakeBite can be installed into 00.dat with minimal risk of conflicting with the game files.

Mods and Mod Files

Mods can be installed and uninstalled by selecting MODS from the main window. Additionally, you can temporarily disable/enable all mods by clicking the toggle switch next to MODS.

If the mod you wish to install is available as a .MGSV file, it is the recommended way to install mods using SnakeBite. If not, SnakeBite provides basic functionality to install unsupported mods.

If your mod is a .MGSV:

Click "Install .MGSV" from the mod manager window and select the mod you wish to install.

If your mod is a .ZIP:

Please note that this functionality is not guaranteed and may cause bugs or glitches with other mods.

If the mod you downloaded is a zip archive, and that archive does not contain a .MGSV file, you can attempt to install the mod by clicking "Install .ZIP" from the mod manager window.

You will need to manually specify a name, and can optionally save the file as a .MGSV for later use.

Use MakeBite (included) to create .MGSV mod files compatible with SnakeBite

For information regarding using makebite to create mod files, please see here:

Please submit a bug report to GitHub with as much detail as possible. If you are using version, please include log.txt, which is accessed by double clicking the version in the main window, or found in your SnakeBite install directory (default %LocalAppData%\SnakeBite). Warning: the logfile is reset every time you launch SnakeBite so please save it immediately after the application crashes.

5) Troubleshooting

If you have sound hardware acceleration enabled in Windows, you may experience distorted sounds or static during gameplay. To eliminate the distorted sounds or static, lower hardware acceleration for your sound card to BASIC or turn it off entirely.

Instructions on changing the sound hardware acceleration:

Go to the Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel. Double-click Sounds and Audio Devices (Win XP), Sound and Multimedia (Win ME/2000) or Multimedia (Win 98) and select the Audio tab. Under Sound Playback, click Advanced, then select the Performance tab. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to "None" to turn off sound hardware acceleration.

Under the Windows 98 or ME operating systems, playing Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance with a gamepad may cause poor performance. A patch may be released to address this issue at a later date. Until that time, it is recommended that the game be played with the keyboard under these operating systems.

If you are having difficulty launching the game:

1) Close any other applications that are running on your PC, including applications in the system tray.

2) Make sure that DirectX 8.1 or higher is installed on your system.

3) Make sure to update your graphic card drivers to the latest drivers available.

If you continue to have difficulties launching the game, please read through the information listed below:

Q: Is your sound card a PCI64 using the ES1371 drivers, version 4.05.1127 or 4.05.1129?

Please install the latest drivers for your sound card.

Q: Are you running the game on a Dell Dimension 4100/4300 series computer and Windows 2000?

Intel identified a problem with the Intel Ultra ATA storage controller, and has offered an update on their web site.

1) The update to the Intel Application Accelerator program can be found here:

2) The latest drivers for the Intel storage controllers can be found here:

Select the drivers for Windows 2000, download and run the setup program, then reboot.

Q: Is the firewall software Zone Alarm Pro being used?

Make sure the latest version is installed, and older version may cause conflicts with the game software.
