Symmetry — A Link Between Mathematics and Life Maharishi.

In mathematics, certain basic concepts, such as symmetry and infinity, are so pervasive and adaptable that they can become elusive to the student. Understanding these concepts and the tools for studying them is often a long process that extends over many years in a student’s career. Students first see infinity appearing as the potential infinite inherent in the positional number system, then implicit in plane geometry, and eventually underlying all of calculus and analysis. Students begin to use symmetry with commutativity and associativity in arithmetic, making more use of it in Euclidean geometry and plane geometry, and may eventually see it in terms of transformation groups. Nevertheless, it is natural to want to teach these concepts in their full value from the very beginning. This paper will describe how I have been introducing students in a general education geometry course to the concept of symmetry in a way that I feel gives them a comprehensive understanding of the mathemat.

Let’s start with the obvious. Symmetry in design refers to the arrangement of the elements on a page that are equal to each other on both sides. Think of a butterfly, a circle, a square, a triangle, or a rectangle. If you fold any of those forms down the center, each side would be equal in size and shape to its opposite side. This is referred to as bilateral symmetry. Shapes like the ones below can all be divided in half symmetrically on their vertical axis. The face, as well as the rest of the human body is usually symmetrical as well. If you draw a line down the middle of a typical human face, you will find that if you were able to fold that image, the eyes would line up as well as the ears, both halves of the nose, and the mouth. Symmetry doesn’t just apply to one object. Symmetry can refer to an arrangement of elements as well. If you divide the design of a page in half, and there are equal elements on both sides, then the layout is symmetrical. In the image below, the ornamen.

Nov 05, 2015 A "thing" is symmetrical if there is something you can do to it such that it ends up looking exactly as it did at the start. As you can tell from the above, a 'good' mathematical definition does not necessarily equate to an eloquent one. To clear things up, an example or two always helps.

Reflection Symmetry sometimes called Line Symmetry or Mirror Symmetry is easy to see, because one half is the reflection of the other half. Here my dog "Flame" has her face made perfectly symmetrical with a bit of photo magic. The white line down the center is the Line of Symmetry

We give a basic discussion of the group theory useful in dealing with it, & with the "internal symmetry" used to classify & relate different kinds of particles. A useful generalization of the Poincaré group, & an approximate symmetry of nature, is the conformal group, which is actually simpler in some respects, & often more useful because of its stronger constraints.
